Aerophagia is a functional upper gastrointestinal disorder that has not previously been well described. Aerophagia refers to repetitive patterns of swallowing or ingestion of air and belching. Neurologically normal males and females can experience prolonged symptoms including abdominal distension, belching and increased flatus. The pathophysiology of aerophagia is poorly understood. Positive diagnosis is based on careful history and observation of air swallowing. Though few effective therapies have been shown to be effective, behavioral therapy and psychotherapy are often successfully employed. We treated a young female patient with repetitive air swallowing suffering from intractable loud noisy belching. To differentiate the diagnosis and confirm aerophagia objectively, we confirmed air swallowing during food intake by identifying remnant gas in the esophagus after up-and-downward movement, and could find a full distended stomach with gas after a meal using video-esophagogram with barium.
